Bunions & Hammer Toe Q & A
What are bunions?
A bunion is a physical deformity that forms when the big toe is pushed out of alignment. As the big toe bends inward, the joint at the base of the big toe pushes outward, forming a bump.
Bunions develop over the course of time due to the mechanical structure of your foot. The way you walk and the shoes you wear may cause uneven pressure, hastening the formation of bunions.
What is hammertoe?
Hammertoe is a deformity that causes an abnormal bend in the joints of one or more of your toes. Hammertoe is usually caused or aggravated by one of the following:
- High-heeled or tight shoes
- Injury
- Muscle/tendon imbalance
- Toe length
- Genetic factors
Hammertoe is preventable and treatable in the early stages, so it’s important to consult with Dr. Patel once you notice signs.
When should I see a podiatrist for bunions or hammertoe?
Bunions and hammertoe don’t require medical treatment unless they’re bothering you or impairing normal activity. A podiatrist is the best person to see for bunions and hammertoe as they specialize in foot conditions.
You may want to make an appointment with Dr. Patel if the following apply to you:
- Your condition requires care beyond the scope of your primary care provider or at-home treatment
- Your foot condition causes ongoing pain
- You experience decreased range-of-motion in your big toe or foot
- Your foot issue gets progressively worse
- Your condition is accompanied by numbness
How are bunions and hammertoe treated?
Dr. Patel treats each foot condition on an individualized basis based on the results of your medical history, physical exam, and imaging tests. Mild cases may require ongoing observation while severe complications may require surgery.
The most common treatments for bunions and hammertoe include:
- Icing
- Focused stretches and exercises
- Proper footwear
- Orthotic devices
- Pads, tape, or splints
- Medication
- Cortisone shots
If your condition doesn’t improve with the above treatments or causes considerable pain, Dr. Patel may recommend surgery. He can remove bony prominences, realign joints, and release tendons that cause the problem.
